Power. One of the fundamental topics whenever we talk about leadership. Leaders (too) often become those who want or even crave power. Power to command others, to direct their actions and activities, and to realise their ambitions. But power leaders possess comes from followers. “When those you lead give you their support and trust you to lead, that is what I call power. They give you power and they watch you. If you give them that power back, they give you more power. If you give it back, they give you more power. Many leaders fall, because they take that power for themselves.”
Today we are in an era of democratic leadership. We are in an era of empowerment, i.e. delegating and trusting decision-making to colleagues in an organisation. Today, it is no longer a sign of leadership excellence to produce a great, brilliant vision (a vision of France of the Sun King Louis XIV comes to mind, for example). Today we want a vision for all of us; one that we as a community need and we all can take as our own. So we want to take into account interests of a wider range of people. And excellence in true leadership is precisely the ability to create such a vision… and to lead empowered people successfully.
Watch the full speech by Bob Davis, entrepreneur, public speaker and author. It was part of well-known TED events (that precise one happened in Paris) that work under the slogan Ideas worth spreading. In this video, speaker also addresses the difference between leadership and management, weaknesses of push tactics in relationships with followers, and more. The message is also available as a book (cover picture below).

Absolutely so and nothing else!
