It is somewhere close to five years since I restarted this web blog. Defining a community, that is to say who I am doing this for, has been the toughest challenge so far.
A month ago, I had a physiotherapy session in a nearby hospital. I have an injured knee, and I have been given eight visits to the physiotherapeutic department. I was in “room 12” and there were three women working there. One thing that I remember utmost vividly is people coming in, one after another, and just being cared for and attended to just incredibly well. I heard very kind and tranquil voices, over and over again. I have seen some big patience in play in explaining the treatment and the exercises.
I have seen real appreciation from the patients, but what I have also seen was what I think is a huge disregard from the government of the hospital. There were some basic tools missing, like simple pillows or mattresses, or other little (and completely inexpensive) things. When an institution spends hundreds and tens of thousands of euros on equipment, and then can not provide such basics … What I know from it is that this is an attitude problem, not one of financial nature. And secondly, these people working there, repeatedly giving a big chunk of their energy to being nice and kind and patient and helpful to those patients – these are my sort of people.

New paradigm leadership is for those of you who want to follow purpose at work – like those physiotherapists in the room 12. And for those other ones of you, who want to help people, who want to follow and fulfil their purpose at work. New paradigm followers follow purpose of their work and new paradigm leaders help enable them as best as they possibly can. Jobs like those in healthcare, in education, or in public administration are jobs of servant nature. And those jobs need servant leaders. These sectors have many obstacles, many imperfections inside, obstacles that drain energy and eventually motivation. And those sectors need their leaders to remove those obstacles.
I don’t like to make big differences among people. Like, say that I am working “for you and not for that other person”. But I simply do value highly that kindness that I saw, like to see the good values on display, and want to support this. PARA in name of this blog means parallel. And DIM means dimension. It is about presenting, explaining and also advocating that one way of doing things – a way with keeping values alive and at strength. All those who aren’t included by the messages … well, they can jump in and join that parallel way of doing things any time they want.
So, content created here is for you – new paradigm followers and leaders. Followers who follow their work’s purpose don’t need to be told what to do, but rather asked what they need.
